My post of May 12 predicting this child sex abuse scandal permeating the entire Catholic Church would be revealed to be bigger and dirtier than anyone imagined was hauntingly prophetic. In relation to my own case.
I always suspected my abuser attacked other victims. But was so isolated, ignored, alone and kept in the dark that it was always just that. A suspicion. A feeling.
When I reported him to the police in 2008 a few others came out of the woodwork, or I found out they had previously come forward. And had been ignored and bullied back into silence. But none were brave enough, angry enough, supported enough, or strong enough to join me in making a police statement. I suspected, even then, it was just the tip of the iceberg. Dozens of other victims was my best guess.
Two years later charges against him in relation to the 60 – 100 times he abused me were dropped because there was no possibility of conviction. He was unfit to stand trial.
The legal system in Australia considers it a good thing to release a mentally ill serial child sex abuser back into the community with the knowledge he cannot be held responsible for any crimes he may commit, and in the care of an organisation that repeatedly gives him status and reputation to gain unquestioned entry to family homes, unrestricted access to children, and looks the other way while he sexually abuses them again and again.
And now I have been told the total number of victims is more than four dozen. At least 50 victims. Very likely more, as these were only the “known” victms. The tip of the iceberg.
If most of these victims suffered years of constant abuse as I did, and I know that at least two of them definitely did, we are talking many thousands of sex crimes against children.
Which the Church knew about but covered up until I reported him to the police.
The monster who committed these thousands of child sex crimes receives every possible support from his order – the Passionists. They knew about his crimes and large number of victims and moved him interstate, changed his name, gave him an unblemshed reputation and foisted him upon an unsuspecting community.
When he was arrested for a tiny fraction of the crimes he committed, they paid for the top criminal lawyer to get him off scott free, so he could pretend he never ruined all those innocent lives.
And so he can now go out and ruin some more without constraint.
And this is not even one of the biggest cases or more depraved predators. Or even one of the the worst cases of Church complicity.
This is just business as usual.
